Concert Review: Rhythm Unplugged 2013

Eko Hotel and suits is now Mecca for the biggest music gigs and concerts in the country. The hall was decked with amazing decorations from brand sponsors Harp, poised to make proper use of the event to unveil their new look which they did at some point in the show.

The show as usual had a long list of performers from musicians to comedians. D’banj, P-Square, Olamide, 2Face Idibia, Phyno, Wizkid, Iyanya, Waje, Cynthia Morgan, Don Jazzy, Wyclef( Co Host), Bovi (the Host), I Go Die, I Go Save, Seyi Law, Gordons, Buchi, Seyi Shay, Sasha P, Tonye, Dr Sid, Niyola, Banky W, Wizkid, and More.

The long list of performers made for a painfully long show, the show ended at past 5 am. Those who were able to wait for Wizkid however were not disappointed for their perseverance, as Starboy Wizzy gave us lovely melodies with a backing live band thrilling fans that resisted leaving and sleeping off. Other top performers were Wyclef, 2Face Idibia, P-Square and Burna Boy.

Wyclef Jean shows why he is still in high demand as a performer, he left the crowd i awe when he played the guitar with his mouth, he played the piano, went into the crowd at some point even climbed the stair case handle and performed with the help of his security, according to I Go Die he performed his money’s worth. It was a solid showing from the Legend 2Face, as he had the crowd all through his performance never losing them. Peter and Paul started of slow when they choose to croon instead of showing off their trade mark dance moves; their performance peaked when they up the tempo, the twin also entertained the audience by competing with each other on stage.

Aside from the Waje the ladies where given a poor reception at the show, Seyi Shay choose to chat off unnecessarily before performing her hit track Irawo the long chatter ruined the performance as the fans were already turned off. Niyola came out at the wrong time. Fans were already impatient and getting tired so it was a huge mountain to climb for an artist already nervous about her comeback, plus i heard she was feeling ill that evening, it was not a good outing for her especially as she tries to make a comeback.

The artist made it easy for the comedians who took on them throughout their set, calling out their poor work ethics and lack of commitment to putting up a good show. Bovi and co-host Wyclef were amazing, I’m sure Bovi’s phone will be ringing off the hook for MC jobs after the night; he knew how to keep the audience busy during those unavoidable technical delays.  Fans won’t forget Bovi battling Wyclef, performing Praz’s verse on Fugees classic Ready Or Not, or his Orange shoes.

All in all it was a memorable event, and fans will look forward to next year as they recount the happenings in this one.  The only dulling was the length of the show which was partly caused by artist turning up late. Naija artist you are fighting for radio stations to be professional and pay you royalties try and be professional and be on time for sound check.

Other notable performers were Deborah Prest who sang the National Anthem, Burna Boy, Phyno and Olamide.
