Some winners were questionable; even the stage’s setting wasn’t at par with the awards image… but that’s beside the point.
How Iyanya snagged the Artiste of the Year without winning any category he was nominated in baffles me. Even Worse is that Davido’s O.B.O stole the best RNB/Pop album over more stronger works from 2face Idibia, Flavour, and Banky W! I don’t get it?! Did the prestigious Headies go bald this year or did it throw its hat of credibility out of the window?
Then there is the case of Burna Boy loosing the Next Rated Award to Sean Tizzle…How?!!! Even a new born baby will tell you that Burna’s Like to Party, Run My Race, and Tonight wooed more fans than Tizzle’s Shole, Mama Eh, and Komole. Wait, Sean tizzle doesn’t have an album out…should he even be placed in the same category as Burna Boy whose album received both critical acclaim and commercial success?
We know the judge’s decision was based mainly on SMS votes, and it would be a slap in the sponsor’s face if their brand ambassadors don’t walk away with one Headies each especially when they boast of having the largest amount of subscribers… but they shouldn’t have made it too obvious now, haba! Isn’t having a nomination enough?
If you believe in conspiracy theories, check out the list of winners and finger out how many of them were mtn ambassadors. Organizers should take heed before the “prestigious” award changes its name from The Headies to The MTN Music Awards.
