Akon who picked interest in the eccentric singer when she was just a back up singer, helped her get a deal with Interscope through a partnership with his label Kon live.
However Akon has terminated his deal with the singer sensing a down turn in her career. The singer affirms his action in an interview with US DJ Sway “I got out while the gooding (sic) was hot. It’s like a business, you build it to sell it,” “When I got it to the peak of where I felt it couldn’t go nowhere, and there was nowhere left to go but down, I cashed out, in other words I sold my share and got out before it was too late.” Akon told sway.
Akon would have cashed out a lot since Gaga has made a lot of income for his imprint and Interscope. ARTPop her latest album has been deemed a commercial failure and the album is reportedly costing Universal Music Group parent label of Interscope as it has not lived up to the expected returns.
The album which debuted at number one selling close to 300,000 in it’s first week saw a 82% drop in sales the next week. This led to retailers discounting the CD.
See the interview below Akon speaks about Gaga at the 3;40 mark.
