Femi Kuti’s album ‘No Place For My Dream’ was nominated for the 2014 Grammy Awards in the “Best World Music Album” Category. The son of the Legendary Fela Kuti, however lost out to French group Gipsy Kings and South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. It was a tie.
Kuti has however grown less optimistic about getting a Grammy Award. This is the fourth time he has been nominated in the Best World Music Album category: In 2003, Kuti picked up his first Grammy Award nomination, but lost out to Panamanian salsa singer Rubén Blades. He similarly lost in 2010 when he was nominated in the same category but lost to US banjo player Bela Fleck. In 2011, Kuti once again lost the award to a Malian band Tinariwen. Femi Kuti deliberately skipped out on attending the awards show stating that he “didn’t want to raise his hopes high, ” and in 2012 he vowed never to attend the Grammy’s again. “If I win it, let them bring it here,” he said. Small wonder he was a ‘no-show’ at the 56th edition.
Femi Kuti says this year’s loss wouldn’t spoil his year. The singer who has been nominated four times but hasn’t brought home any seems to be optimistic about the whole situation. Losing the award might not have ‘spoilt’ his year but it did spoil mine.
The 56th edition of the annual Grammy awards took place on January 14, 2014.
