Legendary American pop/soul singer Prince has instituted a law suit against 22 facebook fans for posting links of his live concerts on their pages and blogs without his express permission and authorization or his label. If found guilty, the defendants whose identities remain undisclosed would have to cough out a whopping $22million as damages to the plaintiff. The suit was filed at the Northern District of Carolina.
The websites identified in suit can no longer be accessed and the user names indicate that like (Purplekiss) are some of Prince’s die-hard fans. The social media world has since erupted criticising prince for his action. Some are however not convince that it is not gimmick to re-invent a waning career. But the truth is Prince has a reputation of suing anyone who infringes on his copyrights. He changed his name from Prince to the Artiste Formerly Known as Prince to challenge Warner Bros right to his materials, but never followed through with his threats. A 2007 effort to sue the Pirates Bay went nowhere.
Nigeria’s 9ice recently drew the ire of fans for berating blogs who post his music on their blogs. We’d just wait and see how far Prince goes with this suit or as a come back gimmick.
